State of Preservation
The work, constructed of antique assembled fragments and an integration of numerous modern coated and stuccoed inserts, presented an aspect of confusion for the formal reading of the constructed details and a discontinuous and disturbed appearance from an aesthetic point of view. It was caused by the alterations of the deposits on the superficial substances.
Restoration Procedures
After the first stage of the cleaning tests, the following procedures took place:
The first stage of the cleaning included applications of a base of agar-agar, respectful of the surfaces and less disfiguring than the historical treatments based on waxes and / or glues. Such passage was also necessary to provide a better reading of the antique concretions that comprise a part of the work, and for an operation that would increase the clarity in the respect of their maintenance.
A cleaning was performed by swabbing the surfaces with deionized water and a solution of bicarbonate and ammonia. In particular, the restorers carefully cleaned and wanted to respect the traces of the historical patination. In particular, one semi-transparent and pinkish section presented on the ancient parts. Also, they respected a more residual, opaque, and brownish section, which affects the modern additions. It has been lightened because, alternatively, it was excessively disturbing. Some marks and scraps were resolved from the use of organic solvents for their removal.
Once the possibility of a clear reading of the surfaces and the joints had been acquired, the disfiguring or no longer functional excesses of old plaster and wax-resin fillings were removed with a scalpel and with the aid of micromechanical instruments. Some moving assemblages have been consolidated with the reactivation of resin waxresin by injections of ethyl alcohol. The grouting was redone in mortar made from air, lime, and stone powders with suitable grain, sizes, and colors. The protection from the future deposit of atmospheric particles was ensured through the application of protective Regalrez 1126. A chromatic balance was subsequently performed with the use of watercolors on eventual lime water glazes. At the end of the intervention, a rare artifact has regained aesthetic harmony in the overall view, recovering a clear reading of the interesting signs of the work instruments.
